The first Head of the department was Dr Raghuram later on the development of department was done by Dr B R Keshvan who was Head of the department and successful Principal for 25 years. And the personality recognized by his contribution in the research in Botany who was Head of the department and Principal for 09 years in this college .There is also contributions of Dr S W Kasture ,Dr O S Rathor as Head of the department and as a faculty Dr Usha Deshpande,Dr S K Atkalikar and Dr D V Dev.

The students of this department submit assignments and present seminars on selected topics apart from their regular classes with theory and practical examinations. The students also have project work assigned to them which they complete in the fourth semester. The students also have to attend the classes and write the examination for a choice-based paper that is offered by the Department. We plan to offer new courses like Plant Biotechnology, Genetic engineering, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Biotechnology etc.By assessing the demands of the Biotech industry, the Department offer Biotechnology at UG as well as at PG level in order to prepare the students in tune to the industry demand.

Further, the Department has plans to start short certificate courses for the PG students in the practical areas of Plant Biotechnology, Genetic engineering, Biofertilizers, and plant tissue culture and Medicinal Botany etc. to help them develop specialized skills to find employment in various industries.

The Department has been carrying out research in almost all frontier areas of Botany, Mycology, Plant Pathology, Phytochemistry, Ethanobotany Seed Pathology and soil ecology as evidenced by the publications in prestigious High impact Factor Journals. All the above achievements have been possible due to the funding received from DST (FIST), UGC under Major and minor Research projects .
